THE ranking: Semmelweis among the 250 best universities in the world

For the first time, a Hungarian university is included in the top 250 of the Times Higher Education (THE) world rankings. Semmelweis has improved 41 places on last year’s result and is now ranked in the top 250 in the world rankings released two days ago.

The latest THE World University Rankings 2023 has been published by Times Higher Education (THE) and Semmelweis University has made significant progress from last year’s 251-300 range to the 201-250 range, making it the highest ranked Hungarian university again. Traditionally, the World Rankings is based on five areas: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook. Semmelweis has improved in most indicators, most significantly in the area of citations and research.

Among the member states of the European Union, Semmelweis is ranked 64th, typically preceded by German, French and Belgian universities on the list.

Rector Dr. Béla Merkely emphasized that Semmelweis University is the best higher education institution in Hungary and Central and Eastern Europe, which owes its outstanding results in the higher education rankings to its academic performance, its internationally recognized quality of education, its participation in the international blood circulation, its high number of foreign students and its prominent role in the fight against the COVID pandemic.
